Licensing Information:
The best resource for acquiring, renewing, or upgrading your Captain's license is through the nearest USCG Marine Safety Office or Regional Examination Center and the National Maritime Center. There are many licenses available and the license granted will depend upon your written exams (or mariner training facility), the size of the vessel upon which your experience is based, and the area of sea or inland waters where you acquired your experience.
Available licenses include: OUPV Limited, OUPV, 25GT Master, 50GT Master, 100GT Master, 150 GT Master, 200GT Master, 500GT Master, 1600GT Master, and Unlimited Tonnage endorsed with Great Lakes, Inland, Near Coastal, and Oceans. Additional endorsements may include Towing and Sail.
Title 46 "Shipping" of the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) is the definitive written resource for most sea Captain applications: http://www.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/cfrassemble.cgi?title=200446
